This one day workshop is designed for beginners looking to develop practical carpentry skills, as well as those with some experience who would like to improve their confidence, accuracy and understanding of professional carpentry techniques.
You will be guided through a range of practical exercises covering doors, hinges, skirting board and architrave. You’ll learn how to measure, mark out, cut and fix materials correctly, while gaining an understanding of the techniques professional carpenters use to achieve accurate and neat results.
Over the course of the day, you will be introduced to:
Doors – hinges, latches and handles
Learn the essential techniques involved in fitting an internal door, from measuring and trimming the door through to fitting hinges, latches and handles.
Recessing, fitting and replacing door hinges
Learn how to accurately mark out hinge positions, use a chisel correctly and chop a hinge recess to the correct depth. You’ll also be introduced to using a router and hinge template as a faster professional method.
Achieving accurate door gaps and adjustments
Understand how to achieve consistent gaps around a door and learn some of the basic adjustments that can be made when a door catches or doesn't close correctly.
Skirting board – measuring, cutting and fitting
Learn how to accurately measure and cut skirting, including internal and external joints, different fixing techniques and dealing with uneven walls.
Mitre or scribe?
Understand the difference between mitred and scribed internal corners, when each technique should be used and how to achieve a neat, professional-looking joint.
Architrave
Learn how to measure, mark out and cut architrave around a door opening, including 45° mitre joints, joining the head and legs and fixing the finished assembly.
Throughout the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to use a range of traditional hand tools and modern power tools, with guidance on how and when each technique can be used.
This is a hands-on workshop with small groups and plenty of individual tuition, designed to give you practical experience rather than simply watching demonstrations.
No previous carpentry experience is required.
