Alongside our scheduled workshops, Sawco Studio also offers bespoke sessions tailored to your individual interests, projects or skill level.

Whether you have a specific piece of furniture you intend to upcycle, want to build confidence using power tools in a safe environment, or are simply looking for a more flexible, personalised learning experience, these sessions are tailored around you.

You might want to:

• or develop an idea you have been meaning to explore

Sessions can be arranged on a one-to-one basis or in small private groups, allowing for a more focused and supportive environment.

Where appropriate, we can also incorporate reclaimed or existing timber into your project, helping you make use of materials you already have or would like to repurpose.

Course Description

A hands on taste of woodworking, focusing on tools, technique and simple joinery in a relaxed workshop setting.

This one day workshop is designed as a practical introduction to woodworking, suited to those starting out as well as more experienced DIY enthusiasts looking to improve their hand skills and build confidence with hand tools.

Working in a small group, you will be guided through the fundamentals of measuring, marking and cutting timber, while gaining an understanding of how simple joinery is used in furniture making.

Over the course of the day, you will be introduced to:

Accurate measuring and marking
Learn how to set out your work properly using simple tools and techniques that form the foundation of all good woodworking.

Posture and body positioning
Learn how to work comfortably and safely at the bench, using your body effectively to improve control and reduce fatigue.

Hand saw techniques
Develop control and accuracy when cutting, with a focus on clean, straight cuts using lightweight hand saws.

Chisel work and joint refinement
Understand how to remove waste cleanly and refine joints so they fit correctly and hold together with strength and precision.

Basic joinery
Explore simple joints such as lap joints and bridles, and understand how they are used in furniture and everyday woodworking.

This workshop is a great first step into woodworking, and should it spark your interest to take things further, the next step is our Intro to Woodworking: Build a Joinery Frame workshop, where you can develop your hand skills and apply them to a more involved project.

Price includes all materials, use of tools and equipment, and refreshments throughout the day.

Workshop Description

Over the course of the two days, Steven will guide you through the process of building a small side table, introducing a range of core woodworking and joinery techniques along the way.

This workshop focuses on developing practical skills through making, giving you the opportunity to work through a complete furniture project from start to finish.

Using a combination of hand tools and selected machinery, you will learn how to measure and mark accurately, cut cleanly, and assemble components so they are strong, well fitted and properly aligned. We will also look at body positioning and posture at the bench, helping you work comfortably, safely and with better control. The aim is to build confidence while working through a structured and rewarding project.

You will be introduced to a range of fundamental techniques, including:

Basic joinery
Learn how simple joints are used to form strong, reliable and beautiful timber joints within furniture.

Shaping components
Develop an understanding of how to form clean, consistent shapes for legs and table tops using hand tools and routers.

Assembly and alignment
Learn how to bring components together accurately so the table sits flat, square and stable.

Surface preparation and finishing
Prepare your piece for finishing, with a focus on achieving a clean and well refined result.

The table design is kept deliberately simple, allowing you to focus on the process while still producing a well proportioned and functional piece of furniture to take home.

All timber and components required for the table will be provided. If you have your own timber you would like to incorporate, you are very welcome to get in touch in advance to discuss whether it would be suitable.

The workshop is practical, hands on and supportive, with plenty of guidance to help you develop your skills at your own pace.
